Every morning, Santa Fe artist Douglas Atwill paints for a few hours in a light-filled studio. After some gardening, a short nap and a bit of writing, he starts work on his latest passion project: a new house he designed for himself and is helping build a mile away.

"I wanted a bigger living room," he says.

Mr. Atwill is 85 years old. This is the 60th house he has renovated or constructed, most of which are homes he has lived in then sold. And nearly all of them have been in Santa Fe, making him a legend in this artsy desert city.

Virgin Galactic heading to New Mexico and then, possibly, to space

SANTA FE, N.M. — Billionaire Richard Branson is moving Virgin Galactic’s winged passenger rocket and more than 100 employees from California to a remote commercial launch and landing facility in southern New Mexico, bringing his space-tourism dream a step closer to reality.

Branson said Friday at a news conference that Virgin Galactic’s development and testing program has advanced enough to make the move to the custom-tailored hangar and runway at the taxpayer-financed Spaceport America facility near the town of Truth or Consequences.

Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides said a small number of flight tests are pending. He declined to set a specific deadline for the first commercial flight.

An interior cabin for the company’s space rocket is being tested, and pilots and engineers are among...

Hobby Lobby plans relocation to Santa Fe Place

National arts and crafts outlet Hobby Lobby has a banner hanging at the onetime Sears space in Santa Fe Place mall.

When the store will open on the city’s south side is not yet known, though a city building permit for interior renovations was issued Feb. 28.

Hobby Lobby corporate spokesmen did not respond to an interview request from The New Mexican. Officials from Spinoso Real Estate Group, which leases and manages Santa Fe Place, also did not return phone calls.

The 56,482-square-foot space has not had a permanent tenant since Sears closed in July 2017 after residing there since 1987.

Hobby Lobby has been in Santa Fe for 25 years, opening at its present College Plaza location, 2020 Cerrillos Road, in June 1994.

“It’s premature for me to talk about it,” said John Waterbury, principal at W...

New Mexico lawmakers debate budget bill on the House floor

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Arguably one of the most important bills, the state’s budget, was debated on the House floor Thursday. House Bill 2 lays out lawmakers’ plans for a $7 billion budget, one of the highest in state’s history thanks to an oil and gas boom.

House Democrats want to spend a huge chunk of it on education, healthcare and public safety.

"It’s the bill that represents the needs and the support of New Mexico," Rep. Patricia Lundstrom, D-Gallup, said.

Meanwhile, House Republicans, who are rolled out their own budget plan, said the House Democrats’ plans are unsustainable.

"And that’s currently the problem with the Democrat’s budget, it’s just unsustainable," Rep. Rod Montoya, R-Farmington, said.

House Bill 2 calls for $117 million to boost salaries for teachers, more than $300 m...
