Sotheby’s International Realty broker on success and the market – Albuquerque Business First

She hails from Canada, she moved to New Mexico from London, she’s a Santa Fe resident of about 28 years and her mother is in the World Golf Hall of Fame. She also happens to be one of the top brokers in Sotheby’s International Realty worldwide.

Darlene Streit, a broker at Sotheby’s, talked with Albuquerque Business First about what it takes to be a top broker and trends she sees in the market.

Sotheby’s International Realty Santa Fe is No. 3 on ABF’s Largest New Mexico Residential Real Estate Firms List with $774.85 million in 2017 gross sales.

She came in at No. 1 last year as the top broker in Santa Fe with $109.5 million in sales volume, according to Santa Fe Association of Realtors MLS data.

Before she was generating millions in sales volume in New Mexico, Streit, 57, was working at Sotheby’s art auction house in London.

“London is so the antithesis of Santa Fe but I came and I just loved the sunshine and small town,” she said.

She also fell for the ease of getting around along with the culture and sophistication of Santa Fe. Since then, she has become well-versed on the market of the state’s capital.

Santa Fe Outlook

Streit said Santa Fe residents are keen on newer homes. She noted building stopped in Santa Fe in 2008, creating a shortage of newer homes. The east side of Santa Fe – walking distance to the Santa Fe Plaza – is a hot spot for buyers, she noted.

She also said Santa Fe is still a hub for retirees, but it’s starting to see a greater age range because more people are working from home and telecommuting, creating an opportunity for people to work from anywhere they want to live.

Presbyterian Healthcare Services’ new Santa Fe facility has also generated opportunity. Streit has since an uptick in doctors and hospital personnel buying in Santa Fe.

Streit Smarts

Streit’s advice for people just starting out is to be mindful of the hard work.

“It’s not a part-time job,” she said.

Streit emphasized the time commitment, drive and work ethic needed for the role. She also noted communication is key, being accessible to clients and responsive to their needs.
